Position Overview: Responsible for performing clinical laboratory testing for all patient types in a timely, efficient and accurate manner in accordance with state, federal and other regulatory requirements. Performs maintenance, quality control and quality assurance for all testing performed in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and departmental policies and procedures. Is able to prioritize workload and demonstrate flexibility to meet customer and departmental needs. Actively participates in process improvement to enhance turnaround times and quality of test results utilizing decision making and troubleshooting skills. Effectively communicates and demonstrates good customer service throughout the health system to include nursing staff, physicians, patients, co-workers and other SJMC customers and employees. Maintains current knowledge and expertise through required continuing education for MLS(ASCP)CM certification.

We are looking for a generalist - ideally someone who is proficient in Chemistry (ABBOTT Architect), Hematology (Sysmex XE500), Blood Bank(manual gel and tube), Coagulation(Stago Compact Max), Urinalysis(Iris), Microbiology culture set ups and Gram stains, phlebotomy. LIS systems: Paragon and SafeTrace. 

Essential Functions:

  1. Competently performs all laboratory tests in each section in which they have been trained according to the current written procedures. Demonstrates sound decision-making skills when evaluating and reporting critical results. Follows appropriate protocol for investigating and checking abnormal or unexpected results for accuracy.
  2. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations,departmental policies and procedures. Performs and records QC per department policy. Assists support staff with processing duties and technical questions or problems related to specimen collection, processing and sample integrity as needed.
  3. Uses communication tools effectively including Service Complaint reports, event reports, Team Discussion, email, etc. Reports results of STAT, ASAP, and timed tests within the allotted turn- around times. Calls all test results to ordering physician that are ordered as STAT. Calls Vanco results to pharmacy as required. 
  4. Receives, administers, and performs proficiency testing as required by policy. Completes competency, educational assignments, and other assigned duties in a timely manner. Uses appropriate PPE and observes other safety precautions and practices in accordance with SJMC and departmental polices. Documentation in Policy Tech that the Exposure Control policy has been reviewed annually.
  5. Is knowledgeable about specimen requirements, specimen rejection criteria, and procedure. Documents problem specimens in log. Ensures integrity of specimen prior to performing tests. 
  6. Checks pending lists and reconciles incomplete work-lists in a timely manner. Communicates status of incomplete work-lists to co-workers, especially at the change of shift. 
  7. Accepts and shares responsibility for completing assigned clinical and non-clinical duties (order review and correction, supervisory review, faxing results, ect.) Bench and Clerical work is completed in a timely, cooperative manner.
  8. Minimizes non-productive time by seeking out work and/or performing activities that will enhance department
    productivity.

Minimum Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) or related field, along with American Society for Clinical Pathology National certification of MLS(ASCP)CM. 

Preferred Requirements: 2+ years clinical laboratory experience.
