PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provides age and population specific direct clinical care to neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and
geriatric patient populations. Delivers patient care according to the Scope of Service for PACU/OPS. Adheres
to and practices the SJMC Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement
activities. Provides age and developmentally appropriate specialized nursing care to neonate through geriatric
patients in the immediate post anesthesia period.


Patient Care
1. Obtain & review all patient data using; observational, interviewing, interpretation & critical thinking skills in
an age specific population and developmentally appropriate manner.
2. Identifies risk factors & provides for patient safety. Implements measures to prevent injury from
environmental hazards.
3. Practices autonomously & consistently with professional nursing standards.
4. Identifies changes in patient status, exercises critical thinking & independent judgment within the context of
a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
5. Develops a plan of care that is unique to each patient's needs, evaluates patient response to plan of care
and reflects measurable goals that are mutually set with the patient.
6. Evaluates patient response to pain management interventions. Offers alternative pain management
7. Demonstrates knowledge & awareness of medication action, side effects & protocols for use. Using 2
patient identifiers gives medication safely & accurately according to policy & procedure.
8. Organizes & prioritizes care of multiple patients with varying levels of acuity in a timely & efficient manner
with a positive attitude.
9. Manages specimen collection, handling & disposition according to hospital policy. Labels blood specimens
at patient bedside.
10. Addresses patient & family's spiritual & emotional needs utilizing a holistic approach.
11. Uses supplies & equipment within safe parameters. Ensures equipment is functioning properly before
use. Reports equipment malfunction following the appropriate reporting procedure.
12. Initiates & completes computerized Event Reports for unusual events consistently. Reports near misses.

Patient & Family Education
1. Assess patient & family education needs based on; a) age/population, b) developmental level, c) readiness
to learn based on patient perception, educational level & expectation of care, d) patient understanding, e)
available coping mechanisms, and f) outcome expectations.
2. Initiates & incorporates patient/family education into plan of care and nursing practice.
3. Identifies continuity of care needs for discharge & follow-up using appropriate resources.
4. Communicates up-dated status report and clear information to patient/family to make informed decisions.

PACU & OPS Specific Duties
1. Reviews PACU/OPS schedule, and anticipates patient care needs. As well as needs of Surgical Services
2. Performs daily/weekly/monthly equipment and medication checks. Resolves medication discrepancies,
identifies equipment malfunctions and corrects through appropriate means. Documents process.
3. Obtains patient report from OR RN and CRNA, reviews patient's records to form accurate assessment of
patient's history, diagnosis, procedure and post op status. Provides accurate patient report when transferring
4. Facilitates patients transition from anesthesia emergence to post-operative care. Documents appropriately
in Paragon CCS, MAR, Order Mgmt., etc.
5. Facilitates professional communications with/between anesthesia, surgeons, staff and families in regards to
changes in patient's status, additional needs and clarification.
6. Practices in a professional manner when representing the surgical call team. Responds in a timely manner
per policy.
7. Takes initiative to review communication book and meeting minutes when absent, signs off on updates
and incorporates changes into practice. Attends and participates in Staff Meetings.
8. Functions as weekend call staffer completing follow-up calls. Assists with add-on, cancellation, patient
9. Able to care for multiple patients in all phases of perioperative care.
10. Works in an efficient manner moving from task to task to ensure patients move through PACU/OPS in a
timely manner. Completes all required daily duties.


REPORTS TO:  Clinical Coordinator PACU OPS

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:  All hospital departments, patients, physicians, families/friends of patients, community agencies, vendors.

QUALIFICATIONS: Current Wyoming RN license. Current CPR, ACLS and ENPC/PALS certifications required at time of hire. Minimum of one year surgical or perianesthesia experience preferred. Two years Critical Care experience preferred and/or one-two years PACU experience preferred. Must have basic computer skills. Good communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills. Extensive pharmacologic knowledge of anesthetic medications, and narcotics desired. Knowledge of airway management, and intervention helpful. Ability to function independently with strong critical thinking skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Hospital Post Anesthesia Unit. Stressful situations

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Irregular work hours, meals and breaks.  Frequent transporting of patients on stretchers/beds.  85% of shift standing and walking. Sight and hearing senses to meet the job requirements.  Must be able to lift, push, pull and move patients, equipment, and supplies.  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Intermittent sitting and computer use. Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and kneel.  On Call hours in addition to scheduled hours.
