This position will primarily work as a full time Unit Secretary, but will also need to be able to float as a Emergency Department Tech during busy summer months (see job description below).


Responsible for receptionist, clerical and secretarial duties.  Maintains patient' records and chart activities.  Functions as focal communication source at the nursing station. Performs data entry and inputs patient charges into the computer.  Performs duties according to the Scope of Service for the Emergency Department.  Adheres to and practices the SJMC Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities

Essential Functions
Receptionist Responsibilities

  1. Receives, greets & directs patients, visitors & hospital personnel arriving in the unit in a courteous, professional manner.
  2. Acts as focus of communication in nurses' station regarding all patient care activities, patient location. Able to provide information & direction. Acts as resource for non-clinical information.
  3. Receives requests from patients & families and refers requests to nursing staff.
  4. Handles communication during emergency situations, stat requests & orders effectively. Activates Trauma Response per policy.
  5. Maintains, develops and updates skills to provide ideal care and service.

Other Clerical Responsibilities

  1. Initiates , assembles and maintains records for all patients. Places stickers and organizes patient record. Flags charts as appropriate for review & orders. Assembles OR and procedural sedation packets.
  2. Dismantles record upon discharge. Assures all pages are labeled correctly and filed appropriately. Sorts & recycles ED charts.
  3. Accurately transcribes physicians orders and enters them into Paragon Order Management. Times orders taken off. Communicates to nursing staff that orders have been taken off.
  4. Retrieves and files Radiology and Laboratory reports. Hands off diagnostic reports to MDs and/or RNs for review and follow-up.
  5. Retrieves patient charts as needed from HIM or ED files.
  6. Maintaines proper functioning of office equipment. Notifies appropriate personnel for repair.

Clerical Responsibilities- Daily

  1. Answers phone in a professional & courteous manner. Channels calls as required. Records & delivers messages for patients & staff.
  2. Completes daily inventory of supplies & orders as needed. Maintains adequate quantity of forms & supplies in ED. Orders remote stock and dietary supplies.
  3. Maintains a clean, safe & functional working environment in nursing station area.
  4. Enters the ED charges & logs database into computer in timely manner.
  5. Completes and compares the statistical report check against the chart and corrects any errors found.
  1. Maintains ED call board on a daily basis.
  2. Fills out admission slip and turns into registration in a timely mannner. Calls specific department to obtain bed # and nurse assignment when patients are admitted.
  3. Maintains chart in appropriate functional order as prescribed by hospital policy.
  4. Receives laboratory reports and makes appropriate person aware of results. Prints out daily radiology report for ED physician.
  5. Reviews chart for appropriate charges in Pyxis and checks against patient chart for accuracy.

Job Title: ED Technician

Under the supervision and/or direction of the Charge Nurse, provide age appropriate care to preemie, neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations. Provides assistance in accordance with the methods and procedures of the hospital. Responsible for unit clerk duties, monitoring, recording of, and interpreting critical patient heart rates and basic arrhythmia. Adheres to and practices the St. John's Hospital Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities.

Essential Functions
Receptionist Responsibilities

  1. Helps prepare patient room, bed, environment for patient admission, returning surgical patient, transfer of emergency patient, initiating preliminary data such as weight, vital signs, and monitor application. Records, interprets, and documents cardiac rhythms and basic arrhythmias. Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height and I and O measurements, as directed.
  2. Assists in and, as necessary, accompanies patient in the admission, transfer and discharge procedures. Prepares patients for meals, distributes food trays, assists or feeds patients, as needed.
  3. Provides morning care (bed bath, if necessary, changing of bed linens, dressing patient) and evening care (back rubs, freshening bed linen, mouth care, etc.) and other general care, as necessary, throughout the day.
  4. Assists with preoperative and postoperative care, such as positioning patient, lifting and turning patient, using proper body mechanics; applying, using equipment and ambulating patients, as directed.
  5. Provides care for patients in isolation, following appropriate techniques.
  6. Makes rounds of patients, anticipates needs and answers or responds to patient call lights and paging.
  7. Provides post-mortem care, as directed.
  8. Able to apply cardiac and fetal monitor leads/transducers appropriately in the various departments, utilizing various monitors.

Job Requirements
Required: current Wyoming CNA License OR EMT and CPR/BLS required at time of hire. Basic computer skills.  Good communication, interpersonal, phone and customer service skills. Ability to stay calm in stressful situations.

Preferred: clerical and/or reception experience preferred.  

Working Conditions
The hospital Emergency Department. At times is fast paced and noisy. Stressful situations. Frequent interruptions.

Physical Demands
80% of shift sitting at desk answering phone and computer use.  Intermittent standing and walking.  Ability to bend, reach, push, pull and lift 15 pounds.
