Provides age and population specific direct clinical care to neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient population. Delivers patient care according to the Scope of Service for Surgical Services. Adheres to and practices the SJMC Corporate Compliance Program and participates in Performance Improvement activities.



Quality Patient Care
1. Obtain & review all patient data using; observational, interviewing, interpretation & critical thinking skills in an age specific population and developmentally appropriate manner.
2. Identifies risk factors & provides for patient safety. Implements measures to prevent injury from environmental hazards.
3. Practices autonomously & consistently with professional nursing standards.
4. Identifies changes in patient status, exercises critical thinking & independent judgment within the context of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
5. Develops a plan of care that is unique to each patient's needs, evaluates patient response to plan of care and reflects measurable goals that are mutually set with the patient.
6. Evaluates patient response to pain management interventions. Offers alternative pain management therapies.
7. Demonstrates knowledge & awareness of medication action, side effects & protocols for use. Using 2 patient identifiers gives medication safely & accurately according to policy & procedure.
8. Organizes & prioritizes care of multiple patients with varying levels of acuity in a timely & efficient manner with a positive attitude.
9. Manages specimen collection, handling & disposition according to hospital policy. Labels blood specimens at patient bedside.
10. Addresses patient & family's spiritual & emotional needs utilizing a holistic approach.
11. Uses supplies & equipment within safe parameters. Ensures equipment is functioning properly before use. Reports equipment malfunction following the appropriate reporting procedure.
12. Initiates & completes computerized Event Reports for unusual events consistently. Reports near misses.

Patient / Family Education
1. Assess patient & family education needs based on; a) age/population, b) developmental level, c) readiness to learn based on patient perception, educational level & expectation of care, d) patient understanding, e) available coping mechanisms, and f) outcome expectations.
2. Initiates & incorporates patient/family education into plan of care and nursing practice.
3. Identifies continuity of care needs for discharge & follow-up using appropriate resources.
4. Communicates up-dated status report and clear information to patient/family to make informed decisions.

Unit Specific Performance
1. Coordinates surgical care of patient with anesthesia, surgeon and peri-operative team. (Confers with pre-op RN, addresses special care needs of patient, coordinates surgical needs of patient with scrub. Verifies comprehension of informed consent and acts as a patient advocate when there are concerns.
2. Acts as the patient liaison during the time out process. Verifies all components of Universal Protocol. Exemplar: Advocate for and includes WHO checklist information in Time Out.
3. Champions aseptic technique in the surgical environment to maintain patient safety. Maintenance of sterile field, PPE use, traffic patterns, respect of restricted areas, etc. Exemplar: Assists in educating peers, surgeons and assistants in maintaining standards. Does so in a professional and respectful manner.
4. Manages specimen collection according to department policy. Confirms with surgeon specimen labeling, diagnosis and special handling requirements. Logs specimens according to policy.
5. Acts in a supportive role to other staff members to facilitate patient care. Utilizes time effectively to support the overall performance of the department.
6. Independently takes responsibility to stay current in department communications. Weekly reviews dept communication and equipment repair journals and unit Blog. Reviews staff meeting minutes when unable to attend, seeks clarification when unsure.
7. Monitors and documents thoroughly use of implants during the surgical care of the patient. Collaborates with scrub to ensure accurate charging of implants used, or discarded. Follows process for physician notification when implants are quarantined for biological validation.
8. Actively utilizes, and maintains preference cards for all surgical procedures. Collaborates with scrub to ensure update of surgeon preferences, and makes changes with addition of new products / supplies. Ensures the availability of supplies, and equipment prior to surgical procedure.
9. Practices in a professional manner when representing the surgical call team. Responds in a timely manner.
10. Functions in the charge role as requested. Performs supervisory responsibilities. Uses good judgment in utilization of staffing resources. Exemplar: Staffs according to schedule. Completes special requests on orders. Continues to work with peers in the rooms to facilitate the day.
11. Confirms contact information with family and communicates information to the team. Follows up with family during procedure when applicable.

Professional Development & Quality of Leadership
1. Maintains, develops & updates nursing skills to implement ideal patient care.
2. At the Unit Level: a) assists & answers questions for colleagues, b) mentors staff, c) presents self as a resource, d) develops & provides educational instruction, e) reviews & updates policies, f) participates on committees, g) participates on special projects, and h) in-services and teaches competencies and i) Paragon Computer Champion.

At the organizational level: a) assists & answers questions for colleagues, b) mentors staff, c) presents self as a resource, d) develops & provides educational instruction, e) reviews & updates policies, f) committee member, g) participates on special projects, h) in-services and teaches competencies, i) teaches at Housewide RN Skills Day and j) Teaches Code Blue Class, k) teaches certification classes (BLS, ACLS, ENPC, PALS, TNCC, STABLE, NRP, etc.) l) Paragon/computer champion.
4. Identifies a need & completes National Certification pertinent to unit. Applies to patient practice.
5. Accepts assignment and/or floats pro-actively with a positive attitude to other departments.
6. Conveys a strong sense of teamwork and support for department, co-workers and colleagues.


Current Wyoming RN license. Current BLS required. ACLS preferred. A minimum of two years OR experience preferred. Prefer scrub experience but must circulate. Strong Ortho, general surgery, urology and ENT skills a must. Good communication, interpersonal, phone and customer service skills. Ability to function as a team member. Ability to handle stressful situations and to adapt to frequently changing situations. Ability to take call per department protocol and needs. Basic computer skills required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Surgical suite. Frequent stressful situations, chemical fume exposure, irregular hours and meal/breaks. Occasional overcrowded conditions and irregular temperatures.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess sight/hearing senses to perform the job requirements. Ability to lift, push, pull and move patients, equipment and supplies. Ability to lift 50 pounds. 90% of time standing and/or walking. Intermittent sitting.
